2022 State Convention

The Michigan Democratic Party looks forward to seeing you at our State Nominating Convention in August at the Lansing Center, 333 E. Michigan Ave in Lansing, Michigan

We will stand with our friends and neighbors to defend democracy and support our strong Democratic candidates from the bottom of the ticket to the top.

We will nominate a strong slate of Democratic candidates who will uphold our progressive values and fight for the hard working families of Michigan.

Purpose of Convention

Party Nominations

At the State Convention, the MDP will nominate Democratic candidates for:
Lieutenant Governor (1)
Secretary of State (1)
Attorney General (1)
Supreme Court (2)
Board of Education (2)
and University Boards including
Michigan State University (2), University of Michigan (2), and Wayne State University (2).

*According to Michigan state law candidates for the offices listed above skip the August primary. Instead they’re nominated by their political party the state convention and go before all Michigan voters in November.

MDP Membership Requirements

The State Nominating Convention is free to attend and open to all members of the Michigan Democratic Party.

According to MDP rules, to be eligible to become credentialed through the VOATZ app and vote at the State Nominating Convention, a person must be a member of the Michigan Democratic Party for at least thirty (30) days prior to August 20, 2022, which is July 21, 2022.

Online membership applications are available here. To meet the deadline to be eligible to vote, an online contribution toward a membership or a free membership application must be submitted by 11:59 PM on July 21, 2022.

Printable membership applications are available here. To meet the deadline to be eligible to vote, a hard copy of a membership application must be either: hand-delivered to Hart-Kennedy House by 5 PM on July 21, 2022 or mailed to Hart-Kennedy House, and postmarked no later than July 21, 2022.

Persons whose memberships are current as of July 21, 2022 but expire before August 20, 2022 are eligible to become credentialed and vote if they renew on or before August 20, 2022.

*According to rule 3.2.2 of the MDP bylaws, the thirty (30) day rule does not apply to precinct delegates, Democratic elected officials, or Democratic nominees to partisan office. Instead, precinct delegates, Democratic elected officials and Democratic nominees to partisan office may become members of the Michigan Democratic Party on August 20, 2022 when they register at the State Convention.

Credentialing

To be eligible to vote at the State Convention, a person must satisfy the membership requirements listed above. That member must also become successfully credentialed through the VOATZ electronic voting system in order to sign candidate petitions and vote at the State Convention.

The credentialing window opens Friday, August 12, 2022 at 9:00 AM. All eligible members will receive instructions via email from VOATZ. The credentialing window closes on Saturday, August, 20, 2022 at 2:00 PM.

MDP Staff will offer virtual training via zoom [sign up here] on how to become credentialed at 6:00 PM on Sunday, August 14, Tuesday, August 16, and Wednesday, August 17, 2022.

Voting

All eligible members of the Michigan Democratic Party who become successfully credentialed through the VOATZ electronic voting system are eligible to vote at the State Nominating Convention.

Voting shall be by voice vote on the Convention floor. In the event of a contested election, electronic ballots shall be available through the VOATZ electronic voting system to all credentialed delegates as outlined in the Convention Rules.

County and Congressional District Conventions

County Conventions shall be held in all counties within the 1st through 8th and 10th Congressional Districts under the 2020 Michigan congressional district map. In those counties comprising more than one Congressional District, each portion of the county within one Congressional District shall be considered a “county” and shall hold a convention. 

District Conventions shall be held in the 9th, 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th Congressional Districts under the 2020 Michigan congressional district map.

  • Date: All Local Conventions will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2022.
  • Place: Each Local Convention shall convene at the time and place designated in the local call issued by each County or Congressional District.
  • Purpose: Elect members and alternates to the state convention committees: Rules, Resolutions, and Credentials. Consider resolutions to be forwarded to the State Party.
