Dear Speaker Pelosi:
I am writing to strongly protest the effort underway to dislodge Congressman John Dingell from his chairmanship of the Committee on Energy and Commerce. Congressman Dingell is the Dean of the U.S. House of Representatives and has a wealth of institutional knowledge that makes him an excellent and effective chair of this committee. His knowledge of the issues the committee deals with, including energy, commerce, and health care, is deep and incisive. He has been instrumental in crafting legislation that has garnered a broad coalition of support in the Congress. He is consistently ranked one of the most effective Members of Congress by his peers and outside groups.
At this time of excitement for the Democratic Party, we should be uniting, not dividing, in the House caucus. We must bring together a broad coalition of Democrats to support President-elect Obama. President-elect Obama accomplished his victory by reaching across the 50 states from coast to coast, understanding the diversity of needs among the states. I would expect that as Speaker, you would adopt a similar approach, attending to the needs of all the great states whose citizens make valuable contributions to the Democratic Party and this nation.
This country is facing an economic crisis unparalleled in recent memory. It is adding insult to injury for you to allow the dean of the Congress, who has a distinguished career of a national perspective, effective legislative leadership and understanding of regional interests, to be removed from his chairmanship at this crucial time.
I appeal to you to stand up against this injustice.
