Michigan Democrats Celebrate Pride Month

Celebration Urges Equal Rights For All

LANSINGFor the ninth straight year, Michigan Democrats will embrace the month of June as a celebration of Pride Month, which recognizes the efforts of all Americans to fight for equal rights and acceptance for the LGBT community.

“Pride Month is a time to celebrate who we are, reflect on how far we’ve come as a people and decide on our future together,” said Phil Volk, Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party’s LGBT and Allies Caucus. “We believe in working with a broad base of allies to achieve equality for all American citizens. This includes people of color, poor people, LGBT people, people with disabilities, everyone!”

“We have had a strong partnership with the LGBT community for years and look forward to continuing that relationship in the future,” Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer said. “Pride Month is the perfect opportunity for us all to embrace diversity and acceptance of others. The Michigan Democratic Party will continue to fight for equal rights, not just for the LGBT community, but for all Michigan residents.”

President Bill Clinton declared June to be Pride Month in 2000. The month was chosen to commemorate the 1969 protest at the Stonewall Inn in New York City which is regarded as the beginning of the gay liberation movement in the United States.
