Tina Abbott, First Vice Chair
Tina Abbott was elected secretary-treasurer of the Michigan State AFL-CIO
on September 23, 1999 at the state federation's convention in dearborn.
In 1973, Abbott took a job with the State of Michigan. In 1985, members
of Abbott's bargaining unit voted to join the United Auto Workers and became
part of a new local, UAW Local 6000. She served as chief steward through
1994, was a servicing representitive for four years and served as administrative
assistant to UAW Local 6000's president.
Abbott was involved in many union activities including serving as CAP
and T.O.P. delegate, member of Local 6000 Civil Rights Committee, member
of the bargaining team, and chair of the women's committee. She also served
as activities chair for the women's committee of UAW Region 1A, as UAW-CAP
secretary of the 14th District from 1997 to 1998, and then as 14th District
chair in 1998.
In conjunction with the UAW organizing Department, Abbott and other UAW
organizers, along with representitives of the Teamsters, Operating Engineers
and Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees, organized workers at the
MGM Grand Casino in Detroit.
Abbott graduated from Wayne State University's Labor School in 1986, and
in 1996 received a liberal arts degree from Wayne County Community College.
She is a lifetime member of the NAACP and served on the Detroit chapter's
board from 1996-97. Abbott also is a Democratic Party precinct delegate
and serves on the party's State Central Committee.
Abbott is married and has three children and four grandchildren, and lives
in Detroit.
