Terri Land - Not Serving Michigan's Citizens>

Using her office for partisan gain

  • Land refused to end the conflict of interest between her role as the state's chief election officer and her position as Co-Chair of President Bush's Michigan campaign in 2004.
  • Land backed Attorney General Cox's decision to ignore serious claims of fraud by African-American voters who were lied to about the purpose of the Connerly anti-affirmative action petition.
  • Land was quick to pursue criminal investigations against Democratic groups, but when she found that her own corporate friends at the Greater Detroit Leadership PAC may have violated campaign laws, she treated a possible felony as a common error.

Breaking promises on election reform

  • Land, while publicly advocating for election reforms, has failed to lobby the Republicans in theLegislature to do anything to make voting easier. She failed to act on unrestricted absentee voting, early voting and same day voter registration. She has given lip service to popular, necessary election reforms such as no-reason absentee voting, but done nothing to get reforms enacted because GOP Party bosses oppose them.
  • Land's proposed Michigan State Plan required by the Help America to Vote Act (HAVA) does not comply with the identification requirement provisions of HAVA nor does it call for election reform.
  • Until pushed by the Department of Justice, Land failed to do anything concerning 600,000-800,000 deceased, duplicate or moved voters which remain on the statewide file several years after it began operation.

Exposing Michigan citizens to identity theft

  • Several of Land's employees have admitted to or been accused of state ID fraud.
  • Audits in 2004 and 2005 revealed that neither the state's master list of voters nor the master driver's license file were secure from theft of confidential data and identity theft.
