Mike Cox - Not Protecting Michigan's Citizens

Cox Not Protecting Consumers

  • Cox has not done his job in protecting consumers from unscrupulous businesses that illegally overcharge for purchases. Mike Cox has rarely taken action against businesses which have violated state item pricing law. Cox (his AG PAC and his leadership PAC) has received $5,100 from the special interests (Michigan Association of Retailers, and their CEO) who want to get rid of Michigan item pricing law. By supporting Republican efforts to do away with the state law to require prices be placed on products, Mike Cox has again failed in his #1 duty: to protect Michigan consumers.
  • During the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina Cox’s office said “there is no direct evidence” of gasoline retailers guilty of price gouging. At that time some retailers were charging as much as 73 cents over the state average. Mike Cox failed Michigan consumers by allowing gas retailers to profiteer in a time of national crisis.
  • Utility costs are up dramatically since Cox became Attorney General.
  • Despite Cox’s promises in his 2002 campaign, more than 99% of unpaid child support has not been collected.

Cox Not Protecting Voters

  • Cox was part of Republican efforts in 2004 to intimidate minority voters by giving hands-on training to Republican challengers.
  • Cox has refused to investigate serious claims of fraud by African-American and other voters who were lied to about the purpose of the Connerly anti-affirmative action petition resulting in the initiative being on the 2006 ballot.

Cox Not Ethical

  • Cox selectively prosecutes complaints against Democratic candidates and officials. Cox has given Republicans who may have committed campaign law violations a free pass, while recklessly targeting Democrats for similar violations. Many of his attempts at high-profile indictments of Democrats have failed independent scrutiny.
  • Cox denied back pay to a Michigan National Guard soldier who did not give money to his campaign.
  • Cox fired a state employee who was eight-months pregnant and didn’t give money to his campaign.
