LANSING – The Michigan Democratic Party today released the following statement on the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe. v. Wade.
“Forty years have passed since the Court’s decision in Roe said that the state had no business coming between a woman and her doctor in health care decision making,” said Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer. “Over the past four decades, greater reproductive rights and greater access to birth control have increased women’s economic power. Now with the passage of the Affordable Care Act, women will finally have parity in health insurance coverage.
“However, with every two steps forward, there is often a step backward. Last year, Michigan House Republicans banned two female Democratic representatives from speaking after they spoke candidly about legislation attacking women’s health care. In late December, Governor Rick Snyder signed legislation that will almost certainly result in the closure of medical facilities providing abortion services in Michigan. This year Lansing Republicans are already threatening further attacks on women’s health care. We must remain ever vigilant in protecting a woman’s right to choose.”
