LANSING – The Michigan Democratic Party today released the following statement on the landmark Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, a decision that will be three years old next Monday.
“Last year was the first presidential campaign of the post-Citizens United era, and we saw record levels of corrupting corporate money pumped into our elections,” said Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer. “While it may have been good for lobbyists and political consultants, it was disastrous for our democracy. Voters were subject to an onslaught of commercials that looked very much like campaign ads, but lacked any transparency in who was funding these messages.
“Here in Michigan Debbie Stabenow was attacked with more than $1 million in last-minute ads by the ‘Hardworking Americans Committee.’ It wasn’t until a month after the election that we learned billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson was behind this mysterious super PAC. If Citizens United remains the law of the land, we can expect wealthy CEOs like Adelson, Dick DeVos and the Koch Brothers to keep shoveling money into our elections and continue overwhelming the voice of the people.”
