Zahra, Markman and O’Brien Have Protected Criminals, Not Kids

Michigan Democratic Party Airs New Television Spot

LANSING – The Michigan Democratic Party is airing a new 30-second spot, “Vowed,” that reveals how Justice Brian Zahra, Justice Stephen Markman and Colleen O’Brien have protected criminals, not Michigan kids.

“The Michigan Republican Party is desperate to distract from their candidates’ records of protecting child pornographers and rapists, instead of children,” said Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer. “They have tried all sorts of excuses, but the facts remain that Markman and Zahra both reversed the convictions of child pornographers and therefore reduced the sentences of these criminals. O’Brien dropped the first-degree charges against a rapist and sent him to county jail for just a year for a felony that carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. This lax attitude toward violence against children is unacceptable for a Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court.”

The new spot references the following cases:

  • As an Oakland County Circuit Judge, O’Brien sentenced a man who had raped an 11-year-old boy to just one year in jail and four years of probation (People v. Jeremy Mark Williams, Case No. CR 2003-189231-FC).
  • Justice Markman reversed the conviction of a politician caught with thousands of images of child porn (People v. Brian Lee Hill, No. 138668, 2010).
  • On the Michigan Court of Appeals, Zahra reversed the conviction of a man who admitted to sharing pornographic images of children with members of an Internet club (People v. Russell Douglas Tombs, No. 236858, 2004).
