Markman Admits Court Favors Insurance Companies
LANSING – The Michigan Democratic Party this week launched two new online Michigan Supreme Court spots that hold Brian Zahra, Stephen Markman and Colleen O’Brien accountable for protecting the insurance industry — which not surprisingly has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the three Republican candidates.
“When Zahra, Markman and O’Brien side with the insurance industry, they are against Michigan families,” said Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer. “Instead of protecting our children and families, Zahra, Markman and O’Brien have worked to protect the insurance companies that help to fund their campaigns.”
Two new 30-second spots emphasize how Justices Brian Zahra and Stephen Markman have sided with insurance companies more than 80 percent of the time, while Colleen O’Brien is a former insurance industry lawyer, who worked to deny benefits to a cancer patient.
The Republican candidates are not disputing the ads’ claims. In fact, in a post last week on his campaign Facebook page, Markman admitted, “Recent opinions of the Court have disproportionately favored insurors,” and “Our insurance opinions tend to be sharply skewed in favor of those cases in which insurors prevail.”
