LANSING – Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer issued the following statement today in response to U.S. District Judge Paul Borman granting an injunction to prevent Secretary of State Ruth Johnson’s citizenship checkbox from appearing on Michigan ballot applications this November.
“We’re pleased that a federal judge is holding Ruth Johnson accountable for her illegal citizenship checkbox,” Brewer said. “Since it was first introduced in the presidential primary, we have contended that the checkbox is unconstitutional and an unnecessary step that served to confound voters and cause chaos at the polls. Having the checkbox removed will allow Michigan voters to exercise their democratic rights without unnecessary confusion and intimidation. All in all, today is a good day for democracy in Michigan.”
