LANSING – As Justice Brian Zahra tours the state of Michigan seeking election to the Michigan Supreme Court, he is championing the view that Michigan voters should no longer have the opportunity to elect Justices.
“The hypocrisy of Justice Zahra is truly astonishing,” said Michigan Democratic Party Chairman Mark Brewer. “At the same time he’s out asking for Michiganders to give him their votes, he’s also telling them he doesn’t really think they should have a say. Instead he thinks Lansing insiders should lobby the governor for appointment to our state’s highest court — a court that is already tainted by the influence of corporate special interests. If this isn’t a sign that the Michigan Supreme Court needs change, I don’t know what is.”
Earlier this week Zahra told the Muskegon Chronicle and Jackson Citizen Patriot that he favors a constitutional amendment to end the election of justices and move to a system in which the governor appoints them for set terms.
