MDP Launches New Michigan Supreme Court Ad, Highlights Court’s Record of Siding with Insurance Companies

LANSING – The Michigan Democratic Party today unveiled its new Michigan Supreme Court commercial, “Streak,” which details how Justices Stephen Markman and Brian Zahra have sided with insurance companies over patients and providers 100 percent of the time under Michigan’s no-fault law, while GOP candidate and former insurance industry lawyer Colleen O’Brien worked to deny benefits to a cancer patient.

“In every single opinion, Markman and Zahra have supported the big insurance companies over Michigan’s families,” said Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer. “Now, they want to add Colleen O’Brien and make the Court even more hospitable to the insurance industry. We need a Court that looks out for children and families, not corporate special interests. That’s why we need to support Judge Connie Marie Kelley, Judge Shelia Johnson and Bridget Mary McCormack. These three candidates protect Michigan’s families.”

The ad cites dozens of cases involving Markman, Zahra and O’Brien that have benefited the insurance industry over Michigan families. These cases can be found at MichiganInsuranceCourt.com.

Each day this week the Michigan Democratic Party highlighted another instance of corruption from Markman, Zahra and O’Brien. On Monday, the MDP filed a complaint against Markman for unethical campaign conduct in speaking to an Oakland County Republican Party’s 400 Club breakfast fundraiser. On Tuesday, the MDP called on O’Brien to renounce the endorsement of corrupt House Speaker Jase Bolger, who is under investigation by a grand jury for election fraud.

On Wednesday, the MDP unveiled a new commercial, “Lily,” that highlights the current Court’s shameful record of not protecting victims of sexual assault and abuse. On Thursday, the MDP pointed to campaign finance filings showing four Moroun family members maxed out to Markman and Zahra just before the Court ruled to place a Moroun-backed proposal on the ballot in November.
