Speaker Bolger Refuses to Step Down From Leadership, Despite Perpetrating Fraud
LANSING – Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer issued the following statement calling on Gov. Rick Snyder, Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, Attorney General Bill Schuette and Secretary of State Ruth Johnson to condemn the actions of House Speaker Jase Bolger revealed in yesterday’s report by Kent County Prosecuting Attorney William Forsyth:
”Even after the blockbuster revelations in yesterday’s report, Speaker Jase Bolger is refusing to admit wrongdoing and clinging to his leadership position in the House. The Kent County Prosecuting Attorney, a fellow Republican official, offered a strong condemnation of Bolger’s actions, calling them a ‘travesty’ and a ‘fraud’ and stating they were ‘clearly designed to undermine the election.’
“In contrast, the silence from Lansing Republicans is deafening. By refusing to condemn Bolger and Schmidt, Gov. Snyder, Lt. Gov. Calley, Attorney General Schuette and Secretary Johnson are implicitly endorsing this reprehensible conduct.
“The governor and his fellow Republicans should call on Speaker Bolger to step down from leadership, and they should do it today. Every day that Bolger remains as Speaker is another day that diminishes the integrity of Michigan state government.”
