MDP Honors Contributions, Accomplishments of African Americans
LANSING – Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer issued the following statement on the celebration of Black History Month in February:
“Today, we begin a month-long celebration of the accomplishments and contributions of African Americans – not just in Michigan – but around the world. From Rosa Parks, to former Secretary of State Richard Austin – the first statewide elected African American – to Mayor Coleman Young – the first African American Mayor of Detroit – many Michigan pioneers have helped to lead the nation in the fight for civil rights and equality.
“We honor those and many more this February. We must remember the struggles of our past in order to succeed in the future. While we have made progress toward equality and civil rights the past several decades, we still have a long way to go. Black History Month allows us to reflect on the accomplishments of African Americans as well as work together toward an America where every citizen enjoys the benefits of equality and civil rights.”
