Romney vs. Romney: Transparency Edition

Mitt Romney “Disagrees” with Governor George Romney on Releasing Tax Returns

LANSING – Once again, Michigan voters have been reminded that former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is failing to live up to the example set by his father, former Michigan Governor George Romney.

At the Republican Debate in Florida on Monday, Mitt Romney declared that he would only release two years of tax returns, instead of following his father’s lead and releasing twelve years, because he “disagrees” with his father about being open and transparent with voters.

“It’s no wonder Mitt Romney disagrees with his father about being transparent: If just two years of tax returns reveal that he paid 13.5% in taxes while keeping his money in Swiss bank accounts and Cayman Island tax havens, who knows what else he’s hiding? Governor George Romney paid a 37% tax rate and he released twelve years of returns to prove that he had nothing to hide,” said MDP Chair Mark Brewer. “Every day, it’s getting harder for Michigan voters to tell if Mitt Romney is running on his family name or running away from it.”

The limited tax information that Romney released on Tuesday showed that he earned no money from wages in 2010 or 2011, instead receiving all of his income from dividends or interest. The tax returns also showed that Romney had a Swiss bank account as recently as 2010 and that he has foreign investments in Luxembourg and the Cayman Islands – both well-known tax havens.
