Brewer Announces New Democratic Effort, Web Video and Website On Mitt Romney To Expose Romney’s Lack of Consistency and Core Convictions On a Host of Issues

LANSING – As Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney continues to say or do anything to become President, Democrats today launched a new effort to hold Romney accountable for his words. On Monday afternoon, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer unveiled a new website (MittvMitt.com) and video highlighting Mitt Romney’s lack of consistency and core convictions on a host of issues.

“The American people appreciate that there are many different points of view in our diverse nation; they just don’t expect one candidate to espouse all of them,” said MDP Chair Mark Brewer. “On issue after issue, Mitt Romney has made it clear that he will say anything and stand for anything to get elected, and the only thing he’s consistent about is protecting people at the top at the expense of middle-class families. Character and values matter, and voters here in Michigan know that Mitt Romney has no core convictions and no new ideas for creating jobs.”

Even conservatives and GOP leaders acknowledge Romney’s lack of core convictions. As the New Hampshire Union Reader said in endorsing Newt Gingrich yesterday, it preferred Gingrich to someone “who tells us what he thinks we want to hear.”

Drawing on audio and video clips of Mitt Romney and multiple television reporters, the video underscores Romney’s ongoing political fight against himself on a range of issues including the economy, the auto industry, immigration, a woman’s right to choose, and workers’ rights.

One clip shows Romney proudly declaring: “I will preserve and protect a woman’s right to choose,” immediately followed by another clip of Romney stating: “The right next step in the, in the fight to preserve the sanctity of life is to see Roe v. Wade overturned.”

In another example, Romney is seen making a statement in support of the American auto industry, followed by a clip in which he repeats: “That’s exactly what I said…‘Let Detroit Go Bankrupt.’”

Today’s video release comes as news reports show that Mitt Romney reversed his own position on immigration entirely based on political expediency. In a story from Bloomberg on Monday, Mitt Romney’s former Campaign Chairman stated that Romney abandoned his support for a path to citizenship for some undocumented immigrants based on a political calculation aimed at gaining support in Iowa. When he ran for President last time, Mitt Romney admitted he’d changed his position on a lot of issues.  This time, he claims he’s Mr. Consistency.  Mitt Romney can’t even take a position on taking a position.  Republicans’ favorite straw man is to talk about “uncertainty” as a threat to growth.  If people are scared of uncertainty, they should be terrified of Mitt Romney.

A 30 second television ad promoting the website and video will be aired in six media markets across the country (Albuquerque, NM; Raleigh-Durham, NC; Columbus, OH; Pittsburgh, PA; Washington, DC; and Milwaukee, WI), and Democratic officials also held press events on Monday highlighting the new initiative in MI, NM, NC, OH, PA, VA, WI, IA, NH, FL, MD and MA.
