Mike Cox: Failing To Protect Michigan’s Citizens

2002 Campaign Promises Broken – Kids, Consumers Victimized

LANSING – As Mike Cox announces his bid for reelection as Attorney General, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer summarized his poor record.

“Mike Cox has failed in his first priority – protecting Michigan’s citizens,” said Brewer. “He has left a trail of broken campaign promises from 2002 as our kids, consumers and others have been repeatedly victimized on his watch.”

Cox’s poor record includes:

  • Internet sex predators – four years ago Cox promised to protect our kids. There are 50,000 child predators prowling the Internet and last year one in five children were sexually solicited online. Yet in four years, Cox has arrested less than 100 predators.
  • Item pricing – enforcement efforts have been pathetic and Cox has lead the charge to weaken this law, taking money from special interests who want it repealed.
  • Gasoline price gouging – after Hurricane Katrina, Cox’s office said “there is no direct evidence” of price gouging. He has done nothing in his four years to stop gasoline price gouging.
  • Child support – Cox promised in 2002 to make this a top priority, but more than 99% of unpaid child support has not been collected.
  • Lack of integrity – Cox has selectively prosecuted Democrats while ignoring violations by Republicans. Independent prosecutors have rejected his allegations and his own lack of integrity has been demonstrated.
  • Mistreating employees – Cox denied back pay to a employee who was a Michigan Guard soldier and fired an employee who was pregnant.

“Mike Cox should be ashamed of his dismal record,” said Brewer. “He has been the attorney for the special interests, not the people’s attorney like Frank Kelley was. Cox must go.”
