MDP Celebrates Dr. King’s Birthday
LANSING- Today the Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) along with citizens around the state celebrate the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
"Celebrating the legacy of Dr. King is crucial to continuing his efforts to spread tolerance and equality. We must continue to keep Dr. King’s dream alive,” said MDP Chair Mark Brewer. “Dr. King’s work toward social and economic justice for all Americans embodies the core principles of what we as Democrats stand for.”
King was born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia to parents Martin King Sr. and Alberta Christine Williams King. Dr. King began his professional career in the ministry. His life-long work to bring civil rights to everyone included leading many historic and effective efforts such as the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955 and the March on Washington in 1963. In 1964, King was awarded the Noble Peace Prize; he was the youngest person ever to receive the Prize.
Americans have recognized King’s birthday annually on the third Monday in January since 1986 when the Dr. Martin Luther King Holiday was instituted.
